Why Gujarat’s Kandla hydrogen transmission plan fell through

The National Committee on Transmission (NCT) has recommended de-notification of the 3 GW transmission scheme planned to supply electricity to green hydrogen and green ammonia manufacturing projects in the Kandla area of Gujarat. All General Network Access (GNA) applications previously received for the area have been withdrawn, leaving no committed load for the project, while one new connectivity application of 500 MW received on July 4, 2026 is under examination. The scheme was originally recommended by the NCT in August 2024, and a successful bidder received a Letter of Intent (LoI) in February 2025, but transfer of the special purpose vehicle (SPV) remained on hold. CTUIL has been asked to reassess transmission requirements once firm demand emerges and explore connecting new applicants to nearby Inter-State Transmission System (ISTS) points at appropriate voltage levels.

Consultants sought as Rajasthan eyes new pumped storage project

Rajasthan Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited (RVUNL) has invited bids to prepare a Pre-Feasibility Report (PFR) for a proposed Pumped Storage Project (PSP) in Rajasthan. Tender documents were made available from July 24, 2026, bids are due by August 3, 2026, and opening is scheduled for August 4, 2026, with the assignment to be completed within 90 days from the work order. The tender does not specify the location or capacity of the proposed PSP. The study will cover topography, hydrology, preliminary geology, environmental and ecological aspects, cost estimates, economic evaluation, reservoir area capacity curves, layouts and a tentative construction schedule.

Rajesh Power Services wins Rs 75 crore RVPNL GIS substation order

Rajesh Power Services Limited has secured a turnkey order worth approximately Rs 75.05 crore from Rajasthan Rajya Vidyut Prasaran Nigam Limited (RVPNL) for a 132/33 kV Gas Insulated Substation (GIS) at Pal, Jodhpur, along with associated transmission line works. The GIS will have two 50 MVA transformers, providing total transformation capacity of 100 MVA, and the project is scheduled for completion within 18 months. The turnkey scope includes survey, equipment and material supply, erection, testing, commissioning and civil works. The company said the Rs 75.05 crore order, inclusive of taxes, was received in the normal course of business and is not a related party transaction.

Bondada Engineering acquires 60% stake in 225 MW Maharashtra solar SPV

Bondada Engineering Limited has acquired a 60% controlling stake in Onix IPP Private Limited (OIPL), an SPV developing a 225 MW (AC) solar portfolio in Maharashtra under the Mukhyamantri Saur Krushi Vahini Yojana 2.0. The portfolio is backed by a 25-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) and is estimated to generate annual revenue of approximately Rs 150.48 crore. Bondada Engineering acquired 6,000 shares of OIPL at a face value of Rs 10 each for cash consideration, giving it 60% of the SPV’s paid-up equity share capital. The project is being developed under Component C of the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Urja Suraksha evam Utthaan Mahabhiyan (PM-KUSUM) Scheme.

Tata Power Q1 PAT rises 11% to Rs 1,401 crore; capex hits record Rs 5,375 crore

Tata Power Company Limited reported consolidated profit after tax (PAT) of Rs 1,401 crore for the quarter ended June 30, 2026, up 11% year-on-year from Rs 1,262 crore in Q1FY26. Revenue increased 8% to Rs 18,898 crore and earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) rose 8% to Rs 4,249 crore, while quarterly capital expenditure reached a record Rs 5,375 crore. Renewables PAT rose 15% to Rs 612 crore, with TP Solar producing 1,001 MW of modules and 862 MW of cells, while Tata Power installed 371 MWp of rooftop solar capacity, taking cumulative capacity to 5.2 GWp. The company has also secured a Letter of Award (LoA) from Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) for 324 MW from its 1,000 MW Bhivpuri Pumped Storage Project in Maharashtra under a 40-year agreement and a Letter of Intent (LoI) for the 491 ckm Ryapte transmission project in Karnataka involving capex of more than Rs 4,000 crore.

Waaree Renewable enters New Zealand, Australia with solar-BESS project agreement

Waaree Renewable Technologies Limited (WRTL), a subsidiary of Waaree Energies Limited, has signed an Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) Agreement for a utility-scale solar photovoltaic (PV) project integrated with a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in New Zealand. The agreement, received on July 27, 2026, has been signed with an SPV of a leading global Independent Power Producer (IPP), with WRTL participating in a consortium with two experienced local companies. The ECI phase will remain valid for approximately four months, after which the principal may award the full Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) contract to the consortium. If awarded, project execution is expected to span 24 months.

PFCCL incorporates SPV for 765 kV Kushtagi transmission project in Karnataka

Power Finance Corporation Limited (PFC) subsidiary PFC Consulting Limited (PFCCL) has incorporated Kushtagi Transmission Limited as an SPV for the “Transmission system for 765kV Kushtagi in Koppal District.” The project includes a 3×1500 MVA, 765/400 kV substation at Kushtagi Taluk in Koppal district, Karnataka, along with associated transmission lines. PFCCL has been nominated as the Bid Process Coordinator (BPC) for selecting a developer through Tariff-Based Competitive Bidding (TBCB), after which the SPV will be transferred to the successful bidder. GIS Data Solutions has been declared the successful bidder for the technical consultancy assignment covering survey and report preparation for the substation and associated transmission lines.

Record 94 GW demand exposes Delhi-NCR transmission constraints

The Northern Region recorded an all-time high electricity demand of approximately 94 GW on June 29, 2026, intensifying stress on transmission corridors supplying Delhi-NCR. GRID-INDIA flagged ‘N-1’ contingency violations at Bhiwani and Moga, high loading of 765/400 kV transformers at Bhiwani, constraints at Jhatikara and severe low voltages across Delhi-NCR. Commissioning of the 765 kV Beawar-Dausa transmission line on June 29, 2026 increased renewable power flows from Rajasthan by 1,500 MW but also increased loading on the constrained Bhiwani transformers. The NCT has called for faster commissioning of the third 1,500 MVA transformer at Jhatikara, the 400 kV Jhatikara-Dwarka double-circuit line and Rajasthan Renewable Energy Zone (REZ) Phase-IV, currently anticipated during April-June 2027.

Energy In Motion, HPCL to build EV charging and battery swapping hubs

Energy In Motion Limited (EIM) has entered into an agreement with Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) to establish and operate fast-charging and battery swapping infrastructure for heavy commercial vehicles at select HPCL retail outlets across India. EIM plans swap-and-charge hubs along freight corridors including Mumbai–Pune, Delhi–Jaipur and Chennai–Bengaluru over the next 18 to 24 months, with EIM owning and managing battery inventory and hardware while HPCL provides space, utilities and common amenities. Compatible commercial vehicles will be able to replace depleted batteries with charged batteries in approximately seven minutes. EIM has commissioned six heavy-duty battery swapping stations in Delhi-NCR and the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) port area with combined daily capacity of 840 battery swaps and is targeting 40 operational heavy commercial vehicle swap-cum-charging stations by the end of March 2027.

Juniper Green to launch Rs 1,800 crore IPO on July 30

Juniper Green Energy is set to launch a Rs 1,800 crore Initial Public Offering (IPO) through a fresh issue on July 30, 2026, with proceeds primarily intended for debt reduction and balance-sheet strengthening. As of June 2026, the company had a total portfolio of 10,247 MWp of renewable energy capacity and 4,563 MWh of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). Of this, 2,408 MWp and 503 MWh of BESS were operational, 3,656 MWp and 3,010 MWh of BESS were under construction and contracted, while 4,181 MWp and 1,050 MWh of BESS were under construction and awarded. The portfolio comprises 50 projects across four states, spanning solar, wind, Wind-Solar Hybrid (WSH), Firm & Dispatchable Renewable Energy (FDRE) and BESS.

ENGIE achieves financial closure for 250 MW Khaba solar project in Rajasthan

ENGIE has achieved financial closure for its 250 MW Khaba Solar Project in Barmer, Rajasthan, with construction expected to be completed by Q3 2026. The project is being developed through Khaba Renewable Energy Private Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of ENGIE, with financing secured from leading global financial institutions. Once commissioned, it is expected to generate approximately 650 GWh of clean electricity annually and help avoid nearly 180 kilo tonnes of CO₂ emissions every year. ENGIE expects around 80% of employment opportunities created during construction to benefit people from local communities.

Rajasthan, California regulators sign MoI on grid modernisation and clean energy

The California Energy Commission (CEC), California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) and Rajasthan Electricity Regulatory Commission (RERC) have signed a Memorandum of Intent (MoI) covering clean energy technologies, grid modernisation, renewable energy integration and grid reliability. Executed on June 25, 2026, the MoI establishes a framework for knowledge exchange, policy dialogue, technical cooperation and sharing of global best practices, including energy efficiency, transportation electrification, long-duration energy storage, energy forecasting and grid planning. According to India Smart Grid Forum (ISGF) President Reji Kumar Pillai, Rajasthan has 62 GW of installed capacity, including 42 GW of solar and 6 GW of wind, with renewable energy accounting for nearly 80%. The virtual signing ceremony included Rajasthan Energy Minister Heeralal Nagar, CEC Vice Chair Siva Gunda, CPUC President John Reynolds, RERC Member Hemant Kumar Jain and Pillai.

Resonia energises 68 km, 765 kV Ajmer-Chittorgarh LILO line

Resonia Ltd. has energised the 68 km, 765 kV Ajmer-Chittorgarh Loop In & Out (LILO) transmission line, with four associated 765 kV circuits charged at the Beawar Substation. The circuits comprise 765 kV Beawar-Ajmer Ckt-1, 765 kV Beawar-Ajmer Ckt-2, 765 kV Beawar-Chittorgarh Ckt-1 and 765 kV Beawar-Chittorgarh Ckt-2. All four were energised at the 765/400 kV Air Insulated Substation (AIS) at Beawar in a single shot. The 68 km arrangement loops the existing Ajmer-Chittorgarh transmission corridor into and out of the Beawar Substation, with Beawar Transmission Limited (BTL) associated with the project.

Rays Power commissions 300 MWp solar project with 400 kV evacuation system in Rajasthan

Rays Power Infra Ltd. has commissioned a 300 MWp solar power project in Rajasthan along with two 400/33 kV pooling substations and a 16.6 km, 400 kV transmission line connected to the Fatehgarh substation. The integrated development was executed on a turnkey Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) basis and provides more than 1 GW of combined transformation capacity. Generation from the 300 MWp plant will be pooled through the two substations, stepped up and transmitted through the 16.6 km line to the Fatehgarh 400 kV Substation. The project combines utility-scale renewable generation with Extra High-Voltage transmission infrastructure for power evacuation into the wider grid.

SECI awards 4.455 MW rooftop solar capacity under Tranche IX

Solar Energy Corporation of India Limited (SECI) has announced winners for 4.455 MW of grid-connected rooftop solar capacity under the Renewable Energy Service Company (RESCO) mode through its RTSPV-Tranche IX tender floated in April 2026. Renergo Developers Private Limited secured 10 projects totalling 3.53 MW, including the 2,000 kW Visva Bharati University project at Rs 2.94/kWh, the lowest tariff among the awards. GP Eco Solutions India Limited secured 400 kW at Rs 3.04/kWh, Cleanco Renewables Private Limited won 425 kW across two projects, and AGF Energy Infra Private Limited secured 100 kW at Rs 3.72/kWh. Tariffs across the awarded projects range from Rs 2.94/kWh to Rs 3.75/kWh, with developers responsible for design, engineering, supply, construction, commissioning, connectivity and operation and maintenance through the Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) term.

Coal India Q1 capex rises 16.64% to Rs 3,399 crore

Coal India Limited (CIL) incurred capital expenditure of Rs 3,399 crore in Q1 FY 2026-27, up 16.64% from Rs 2,914 crore in the corresponding period of the previous financial year. The company exceeded its Q1 target of Rs 3,349 crore, achieving 101.5% of planned expenditure, with quarterly spending representing 20.60% of its Rs 16,500 crore FY 2026-27 capex target. CIL spent Rs 1,804 crore on land acquisition and related rehabilitation and resettlement activities, Rs 1,754 crore on railway sidings and rail corridors, Rs 195 crore on coal handling plants, silos, weighbridges and roads, and Rs 819 crore on plant and machinery. It also spent Rs 278 crore on solar projects and Rs 207 crore on joint ventures, while consolidated net profit rose 0.6% year-on-year to Rs 8,852.11 crore and revenue from operations increased 8% to Rs 46,254.80 crore.

Over 5,400 power sector cases pending across courts, APTEL and CERC

Nearly 5,407 cases involving India’s power sector are pending across judicial forums, the Appellate Tribunal for Electricity (APTEL) and the Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC). The Ministry of Power told the Lok Sabha on July 23, 2026 that about 1,303 court cases involving the Ministry are pending before various judicial forums, while 2,911 matters were pending before APTEL and 1,193 petitions before CERC as of June 30, 2026. The disputes cover General Network Access (GNA), connectivity, Right of Way (RoW), Indian Electricity Grid Code (IEGC) compliance, Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs), Change in Law, tariff determination, Force Majeure and the Deviation Settlement Mechanism (DSM). The Ministry said it has not quantified the aggregate financial or operational impact because each matter depends on its individual facts, circumstances and eventual decisions.

L&T-Hitachi Energy consortium signs TenneT framework for 2 GW HVDC programme

Larsen & Toubro (L&T), in consortium with Hitachi Energy, has entered into a Framework Cooperation Agreement (FCA) with TenneT covering six projects in principle and future opportunities under TenneT’s 2-GW High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) programme. The consortium will continue executing Ijmuiden Ver Alpha and Nederwiek 1 in the Netherlands and begin Nederwiek 3 in the Netherlands and LanWin 5 in Germany. The four projects together represent 8 GW of transmission capacity operating at 525 kV and will transfer renewable electricity from the Dutch and German sectors of the North Sea to onshore grids. Under the Engineering, Procurement, Construction and Installation (EPCI) scope, L&T will execute offshore converter platforms and associated infrastructure, while Hitachi Energy will provide its HVDC Light technology.

Masdar, EPCG sign deals for 150 MW solar, eye 400 MW pumped hydro

Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company PJSC (Masdar) and Elektroprivreda Crne Gore (EPCG) have signed Joint Development Agreements (JDAs) for 150 MW of solar capacity and a Framework for Action (FFA) agreement to explore over 400 MW of pumped hydro energy storage in Montenegro. The solar agreements cover the 115 MW Štedim solar photovoltaic (PV) project and the 35 MW Krupac solar PV project. These are the first projects being progressed through the 50/50 joint venture (JV) to be established following the Joint Venture Agreement (JVA) signed in April 2026, with the partnership targeting up to 2 GW of renewable energy capacity in Montenegro. Masdar has been active in Montenegro since 2018 through its investment in the 72 MW Krnovo Wind Farm, while its global portfolio exceeds 65 GW and it targets 100 GW of global renewable energy capacity by 2030.
