Rooftop solar installations get fourth mounting structure option
The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has added Zinc Aluminium Magnesium Alloy (ZAM) to the list of approved materials for Module Mounting Structures used in rooftop solar projects under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana. The change was notified through a government memorandum dated May 19, 2026.
Module Mounting Structures are the metal frames that support rooftop solar panels and keep them fixed against wind and weather conditions. Until now, only three materials were permitted for these structures: Hot Dip Galvanized Iron, Aluminium, and Hot Dip Galvanized Mild Steel. With the latest amendment, ZAM becomes the fourth approved option.
The Ministry stated that the amendment was introduced after receiving requests for the inclusion of ZAM Alloy. MNRE subsequently consulted the National Institute of Solar Energy before approving the revision to the technical specifications.
The government has specified that ZAM used for rooftop solar mounting structures must comply with Indian Standard IS 18513:2023. The existing specifications for Galvanized Iron, Aluminium, and Mild Steel remain unchanged.
Durability focus for rooftop solar systems
The mounting structure is a critical component of rooftop solar systems because it supports panel stability and alignment over the project’s life. Industry assessments generally consider ZAM Alloy to have strong corrosion resistance properties, which may improve durability in coastal and humid regions.
The amendment does not alter any other technical requirements under the PM Surya Ghar scheme. Mild Steel will continue to remain the preferred option for raised mounting structures where higher elevation or specific tilt requirements are needed.
No mandatory shift to ZAM
MNRE has not made ZAM mandatory for rooftop solar installations and has not indicated whether the material will reduce installation costs. The amendment only allows installers to offer ZAM-based mounting structures as an additional option under the scheme.
For consumers applying under PM Surya Ghar, the immediate impact is wider material choice. Whether ZAM becomes a standard offering across the rooftop solar market will depend on adoption by installers and manufacturers in the coming months.
