Kazakhstan has started engineering surveys for its first modern nuclear power station at Ulken in the Almaty region. The studies mark the initial stage of the project, following a ceremony earlier this month held by the Agency for Atomic Energy and Russia’s Rosatom.
The current phase involves a detailed review of the site’s suitability, including seismic and environmental assessments. The work requires drilling at least 50 wells to depths of 30 to 120 meters. The surveys will continue for 18 months before a final location decision is made.
The project is planned to use Russia’s VVER-1200 reactor, a Generation 3+ pressurised water reactor with a capacity of 1,200 MW and a lifespan of 60 years, extendable by another 20 years. Around $1 billion has been allocated for schools, hospitals, and social facilities in addition to the estimated $14–15 billion cost of the facility.
In June, Kazakhstan confirmed Rosatom would lead construction of its first nuclear power station, while China’s CNNC would take charge of a second project.Â
Author: PPD Team Date: November 7, 2024 A new report from the International Solar Alliance (ISA) highlights a global increase in sustainable energy investments, rising from $2.4 trillion in 2018 to an expected $3.1 trillion by 2024, with solar energy dominating green investments. Solar alone now accounts for 59 per cent of these investments, primarily due to decreasing technology costs and a surge in support from the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region, which has emerged as the…
Author: PPD Team Date: December 26, 2024 Adani Enterprises Limited (AEL) has announced plans to set up an Ultra Super Critical Thermal Power Plant in Bihar. The project will involve an investment of Rs 200 billion.
Author: PPD Team Date: November 21, 2024 The Ministry of Environment, Forests, and Climate Change (MoEFCC) has simplified compliance requirements for renewable energy projects. Solar module manufacturing units, solar and wind power projects, and mini hydel projects under 25 MW are now exempt from obtaining Environmental Clearance (EC) and Consent to Establish (CTE). Additionally, projects with an EC will no longer require a separate CTE or Consent to Operate, reducing duplication in the process. A…
Author: PPD Team Date: October 18, 2024 Rayzon Solar has won a contract to supply 216 MW of high-efficiency photovoltaic (PV) modules to Larsen & Toubro (L&T) for three solar projects across India. The modules will be integral to L&T’s floating solar projects at Panchet and Ramagundam, as well as a ground-based solar project in Bihar.
Author: PPD Team Date: December 1, 2025 The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy has released a draft proposal to raise the minimum efficiency requirements for solar PV modules listed under the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers. The plan introduces phased standards from January 1, 2027 and tighter benchmarks from January 1, 2028. The draft sets new thresholds for each application category. For utility and grid-scale plants under Category I, c-Si modules need to…
