Jupiter Wagons wins 100 MW/400 MWh BESS projects in West Bengal
Jupiter Wagons Limited (JWL) has emerged as the successful bidder for two standalone Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects with a combined capacity of 100 MW/400 MWh awarded by West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company Ltd (WBSEDCL).
The projects, located at Jeeat and Kharagpur, were secured through e-reverse auctions conducted under a Tariff-Based Competitive Bidding (TBCB) process. JEM Energy, a subsidiary of JWL, will execute and operate the projects.
The order involves a BESS project worth approximately Rs 400 crore and will be implemented under a 15-year Build-Own-Operate (BOO) model with WBSEDCL. The long-term arrangement provides JEM with revenue visibility while expanding its presence in India’s energy storage market.
Order book
The addition of the 100 MW/400 MWh projects takes JEM Energy’s BESS order book to over 500 MWh, including Commercial & Industrial (C&I) projects. The order book is valued at more than Rs 500 crore.
JEM Energy is targeting a BESS order book of approximately Rs 1,000 crore by FY27. The West Bengal projects also increase the scale of its utility-scale storage portfolio and provide a base for pursuing further utility-scale and C&I opportunities across India.

The projects strengthen JWL’s presence in the energy transition ecosystem and support its strategy of expanding into high-growth businesses beyond its traditional railway and mobility operations.
For JEM Energy, the projects add significant scale to its BESS business and strengthen its platform for pursuing additional utility-scale and C&I opportunities across India.
JWL is expanding from its traditional railway rolling stock business towards an integrated energy solutions portfolio. In June, the company announced the export of a fully integrated BESS container to the United States through JEM Energy.
