BESS units failed to auto-disconnect during Gujarat grid frequency event
Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) operating in charging mode did not automatically disconnect during a low-frequency grid event on May 13, 2026, despite requirements under the Indian Electricity Grid Code (IEGC) 2023. The disturbance at the Khavda renewable energy complex resulted in the loss of 8,963 MW of generation and a fall in grid frequency from 49.953 Hz to 49.398 Hz within 19 seconds. Following manual instructions from NRLDC, BESS units stopped charging, providing around 650 MW of load relief. NRLDC has directed the concerned renewable energy plants to configure BESS operating in charging mode to disconnect automatically at 49.6 Hz with a 50 ms time delay.
