Hitachi Energy to invest Rs 1,000 crore in Tamil Nadu expansion
Hitachi Energy India has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Government of Tamil Nadu to invest Rs 1,000 crore over the next three to five years. The MoU was signed in the presence of the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Thiru C. Joseph Vijay.
The investment will support the expansion of Hitachi Energy Technology Services’ Global Technology and Innovation Centre (GTIC) in Porur, Chennai, and the addition of a new manufacturing line at Hitachi Energy India’s existing facility in Chengalpattu. According to the Tamil Nadu government, the project is expected to create around 1,000 high-skilled technology jobs.
Expansion plans
The new manufacturing line will produce semiconductor-based HVAC-to-HVDC conversion equipment. A Guidance TN official said the additional line will be established within the existing Chengalpattu facility alongside its current HVDC valve manufacturing operations.
The semiconductor-based equipment will support high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission systems, which enable long-distance power transmission with lower losses and facilitate the integration of renewable energy into the grid.
Hitachi Energy already has a significant presence in Tamil Nadu through its GTIC in Chennai and its manufacturing facility in Chengalpattu. The company said the investment will expand its manufacturing and engineering capabilities in the state while reinforcing Tamil Nadu’s position as a hub for advanced power technologies, research, engineering and power electronics. The Porur centre serves as a global technology and innovation hub for the Hitachi Group, while the Chengalpattu facility manufactures power and energy equipment for domestic and export markets.
