Waaree starts India’s first automated BESS container manufacturing plant
Waaree Energy Storage Solutions Pvt Ltd (Waaree ESS), a subsidiary of Waaree Energies Limited, has commenced operations at its Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) container manufacturing facility, marking its entry into integrated energy storage manufacturing.
The company stated that the facility’s capacity has been increased to 5.15 GWh from the originally planned 3.5 GWh through production debottlenecking measures and improvements in battery cell energy density.
Manufacturing plans
According to Waaree ESS, the plant is India’s first advanced automated BESS container manufacturing facility. It incorporates Industry 4.0 technologies, Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs), automated assembly lines, intelligent material handling systems, and integrated testing and quality assurance infrastructure.
The commissioning of the BESS container facility represents the first phase of the company’s broader 20 GWh energy storage manufacturing roadmap.
During the current financial year, Waaree ESS plans to operationalise 5.15 GWh of battery pack manufacturing capacity and 3.5 GWh of lithium cell manufacturing capacity.
The company said these manufacturing assets are intended to support the development of a domestic energy storage supply chain spanning lithium cells, battery packs and utility-scale BESS containers.
Energy storage role
The development comes as battery energy storage assumes a larger role in India’s power sector amid rising additions of solar and wind capacity.
Utility-scale BESS installations are increasingly being deployed to provide grid balancing services, reduce renewable energy curtailment and facilitate the supply of electricity during peak demand periods. The segment has also seen growing procurement activity from central and state agencies in recent years.
Waaree ESS stated that its integrated manufacturing approach is expected to reduce dependence on imported energy storage equipment and enable faster delivery of domestically manufactured storage solutions.
Company profile
Waaree ESS develops battery technologies and energy storage systems for utility, commercial and industrial, and infrastructure applications. The company is establishing manufacturing capabilities across lithium cells, battery packs and utility-scale storage systems as part of its expansion plans in the energy storage segment.
