Tata Power commissions 72.5 MW captive solar project in Rajasthan
Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited (TPREL) has commissioned a 72.5 MW captive solar project at Kalasar in Bikaner, Rajasthan, developed to supply green energy to Tata Steel Limited (Tata Steel) through TP Vardhman Surya Limited, a subsidiary of TPREL.
The project is expected to generate 166 million units (MUs) of green energy annually and offset approximately 1,18,856 tonnes of carbon emissions per annum. It is intended to support Tata Steel’s decarbonisation and sustainability goals.
The project uses 1,71,360 solar modules manufactured by TP Solar Limited. The facility integrates large-scale solar generation with technology solutions as part of Tata Steel’s decarbonisation efforts.
Renewable capacity
With the addition of the project, TPREL’s total renewable utility capacity has reached 12.3 GW. Approximately 7 GW is operational, comprising 5.7 GW of solar and 1.3 GW of wind capacity.
Another 5.3 GW is under various stages of implementation, including 2.2 GW of solar and 3.1 GW of wind capacity. These projects are expected to be commissioned in phases over the next 6-24 months.
TPREL serves sectors including utility requirements, data centres, communications, information technology (IT), petrochemicals, steel, automobiles, fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) and biotechnology.
The company said the project demonstrates its engineering and execution capabilities in delivering technology-driven renewable energy assets within demanding timelines. It remains focused on developing clean energy infrastructure supporting grid resilience and industrial decarbonisation, while contributing to India’s target of achieving 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030 and Tata Power’s vision of a sustainable energy future.
