Patratu Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited (PVUNL) has synchronised Unit-2, an 800 MW unit of the Patratu Super Thermal Power Plant (STPP), with the grid on March 17, 2026. The milestone advances the project towards full commissioning of Phase I.
Project progress
The development follows the commercial operation of Unit-1, which was declared on November 5, 2025. Unit-2 has been synchronised but has not yet achieved commercial operation.
PVUNL Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Ashok Sehgal stated that the next steps include achieving full load of 800 MW, completing trial operations, and securing early commercial operation. He acknowledged the roles of Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), the Jharkhand Department of Energy, and the Ministry of Power in the project’s progress.
Project structure and scope
PVUNL is a joint venture between NTPC Limited (NTPC) and Jharkhand Bijli Vitran Nigam Limited (JBVNL). Phase I comprises three units of 800 MW each, totalling 2,400 MW, being developed in Ramgarh district under an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract awarded to BHEL, valued at Rs 18,668 crore.
Approximately 85% of the generated power will be allocated to Jharkhand. Coal supply is planned from the Banhadi coal block in Latehar district, where no-objection certificates have been obtained from local communities.
With Unit-2 synchronised and Unit-3 under development, the project remains on track for full Phase I completion. A Phase II expansion of 2,800 MW is also planned.
