PM Modi calls for faster rooftop solar rollout, canal-top solar expansion

Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, while chairing the 51st meeting of the PRAGATI platform at Seva Teerth, directed ministries and state governments to accelerate rooftop solar deployment across urban areas and explore canal-top solar projects as part of India’s clean energy expansion efforts.

Reviewing power sector projects during the meeting, the Prime Minister stressed the need to scale up rooftop solar installations in cities, residential areas and public institutions. He said rooftop solar adoption should be pursued in mission mode to lower electricity costs, strengthen energy security and support clean energy generation at the household and community level.

The Prime Minister also highlighted the potential of using canal infrastructure for renewable energy generation. He called for exploration of solar panel installations along canals and over canals, stating that such projects could optimise land use, reduce water evaporation losses and generate additional economic value from existing water infrastructure while producing clean electricity.

During the meeting, the Prime Minister reviewed seven major infrastructure projects spanning the Railways, Power and Road sectors across nine states, involving a combined investment of around Rs 30,000 crore.

He observed that delays in the implementation of public infrastructure projects result in cost escalation and the postponement of delivery of essential services to citizens. He urged ministries, departments and state governments to adopt a more proactive and time-bound approach to address pending issues and remove implementation bottlenecks.
