Patratu Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited (PVUNL) achieved a major milestone on March 11, 2025, by synchronizing Unit 1 of the Patratu Thermal Power Project Phase I with the grid. On the same day, a dry run was completed for all units of the project, marking significant progress in its commissioning.

PVUNL, a special purpose vehicle (SPV) formed by NTPC Limited in partnership with Jharkhand Bijli Vitran Nigam Limited (JBVN), is developing the project at Patratu in Jharkhand’s Ramgarh district. Phase I consists of three units of 800 MW each, with a total capacity of 2,400 MW. The project, being developed at an estimated cost of Rs 186.68 billion, is being executed under an engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contract awarded to Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL).

Of the total power generated, 85% (over 2,000 MW) will be supplied to Jharkhand. Phase II of the project is set to add another 2,800 MW.

Fuel for the power plant will come from the Banhadi coal block in the Latehar district, with most villages granting no objection certificates (NOCs) for mining operations. PVUNL, which took over the Patratu Thermal Power Station in 2016, has been steadily advancing project implementation. On January 21, 2025, it completed a trial run for the project’s rail connectivity, further strengthening logistics for coal transportation.
