Ocean Winds and Eletrobras partner to explore offshore wind opportunities in Brazil
Ocean Winds (OW) and Eletrobras have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) in São Paulo to collaborate on offshore wind energy projects in Brazil, aligning with the country’s renewable energy targets and economic development goals.
This partnership aims to harness Brazil’s wind resources to create a sustainable energy future while promoting local job creation and community development.
OW, a 50/50 joint venture between EDP Renewables (EDPR) and Engie, has identified Brazil as a strategic market due to its significant potential to meet the growing demand for renewable energy. The country’s commitment to the energy transition, along with opportunities for local supply chains and communities, further supports this collaboration.
Eletrobras’s mergers and acquisitions and business development director, Leonardo Soares Walter, emphasized the company’s focus on clean energy projects to contribute to the energy transition, aiming for net-zero emissions by 2030. Eletrobras currently generates 97% of its energy from renewable sources and plans to reach 100% following the sale of its thermal power plants.
The agreement between OW and Eletrobras will enable strategic cooperation, advancing cleaner energy generation and contributing to the decarbonization of Brazil’s economy with enhanced energy security. OW’s chief business development officer, Rafael Munilla, highlighted the company’s commitment to building a long-term relationship with Eletrobras to support Brazil’s energy transition.
OW, which integrates the offshore wind assets of EDPR and Engie, currently has 1.5 GW under construction and 4 GW under development. By 2025, OW aims to have between 5 and 7 GW of projects in operation or construction and 5 to 10 GW in advanced development. The company’s primary target markets include Europe, the US, and select Asian countries, where substantial growth is anticipated.
