NHPC signs PPA with TSECL for 1,720 MW Kamala hydro project
NHPC Limited has signed a 40-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Tripura State Electricity Corporation Ltd. (TSECL) for the supply of electricity from the 1,720 MW Kamala Hydro Electric Project in Arunachal Pradesh. The agreement was signed in Agartala on July 10, 2026, and will remain valid for 40 years from the project’s Commercial Operation Date (COD).
Long-term power supply
The PPA was signed by Ranjeet Thakur, General Manager (Commercial), NHPC, and Sujata Sarkar, Deputy General Manager (Commercial), TSECL, during “Destination Tripura: Business Conclave 2026,” organised by the Government of Tripura.
The signing ceremony was attended by Abhisek Singh, IAS, Secretary, Department of Power, Government of Tripura, Biswajit Basu, Managing Director, TSECL, and senior officials from both organisations.
NHPC Chairman and Managing Director Bhupender Gupta said the long-term agreement supports the company’s commitment to expanding hydropower generation and strengthening India’s clean energy transition.
About the project
The 1,720 MW Kamala Hydro Electric Project will be developed on the Kamala River, a tributary of the Subansiri River, across Kamle, Kra Daadi and Kurung Kumey districts in Arunachal Pradesh.
The project includes the construction of a 216 m high concrete gravity dam and an underground powerhouse. It has a scheduled completion period of 96 months. Once commissioned, the project is expected to generate 6,869.92 million units (MU) of electricity annually. The total project cost at current prices is Rs 26,069.50 crore.
The agreement with TSECL follows another long-term PPA signed by NHPC with Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Limited (GUVNL) on June 30, 2026, in Vadodara. That agreement also provides for the supply of electricity from the 1,720 MW Kamala Hydro Electric Project for a period of 40 years from the COD.
