The Arunachal Pradesh State Pollution Control Board on Wednesday conducted a public hearing for environmental clearance to the 1,200 MW Kalai-II hydroelectric project in Anjaw district, being developed by THDC India Limited.
The hearing, chaired by Anjaw Deputy Commissioner Millo Kojin, was attended by Women and Child Development Minister Dasanglu Pul, THDC officials, and more than 350 project-affected persons from 33 villages.
The Rs 14,000 crore project is expected to generate free electricity worth Rs 318 crore annually once commissioned and contribute Rs 2.2 crore each year to the Local Area Development Fund. Officials said it would also create around 1,700 direct jobs and drive development in roads, healthcare, education, and allied services.
During the session, APSPCB officials outlined the clearance procedure, while THDC and its consultant WAPCOS Ltd presented details of environmental impacts and mitigation measures. Most participants supported the project, though concerns were raised regarding land rates, compensation, and employment.
Deputy Commissioner Kojin said the inputs would be included in the official record and proposed exposure visits for representatives of affected villages to the Tehri dam. THDC’s executive director A K Ghildiyal and senior officials assured that the company would address concerns under existing rules and guidelines.
