India’s power sector emissions fall 1% in early 2025

India’s power sector carbon dioxide emissions fell 1 per cent year-on-year in the first half of 2025, only the second decline in nearly 50 years, according to the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA).

The fall was driven by record clean energy additions, mild weather that cut electricity demand, and higher hydropower output. Fossil fuel generation dropped 29 TWh, even as overall power output grew 9 TWh.

India added 25.1 GW of non-fossil capacity during January-June, up 69 per cent from the previous record, enough to generate nearly 50 TWh annually.

CREA said power sector emissions could peak before 2030 if clean energy expansion continues and demand remains within projections.
