The US Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) has launched a process to consider offshore wind energy leasing off the coast of Guam, a US Pacific territory. A Call for Information and Nominations has been issued to gather public input and identify potential leasing areas.
This initiative aligns with Guam’s renewable energy targets of 50% by 2035 and 100% by 2045, as well as the US administration’s goal of installing 30GW of offshore wind capacity by 2030.
BOEM will collaborate with local governments, indigenous communities, and stakeholders to minimize conflicts and assess the environmental impact of the proposed wind energy areas (WEAs). Following public feedback and commercial nominations, BOEM will proceed with leasing and environmental reviews.
BOEM director Elizabeth Klein emphasized that the project will reduce carbon emissions and energy costs for Guam residents while advancing the US’s clean energy and climate goals.
