India and Brazil held the inaugural meeting of their Joint Working Group (JWG) on renewable energy cooperation via video conference on February 3, 2026. The meeting marks the first formal step toward implementing the bilateral memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed in July 2025.
The meeting was co-chaired by Shri Abhay Bakre, Mission Director of India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission and Group Head for International Relations at the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE). Representatives from both countries shared overviews of their renewable energy programmes and discussed areas for deeper technical and policy cooperation.
Both sides agreed to prioritise collaboration in hydrogen produced from zero and low-emission technologies, integration of renewable energy into power grids, and bioenergy. These focus areas align with the cooperation framework outlined in the MoU, which also covers solar, wind, hydropower, energy storage, and capacity-building initiatives.
The Joint Working Group was constituted under the MoU signed between India’s MNRE and Brazil’s Ministry of Mines and Energy. The group is mandated to identify areas of mutual interest, track progress of cooperative activities, and facilitate coordination on joint projects. The MoU came into effect upon signing and is valid for an initial period of five years, with a provision for automatic renewal.
