Hyundai names Tamil Nadu as flagship EV hub for India
Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) has announced that Tamil Nadu will serve as its “Flagship EV Hub for India,” as the company expands its electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing, localization, charging infrastructure, and skill development initiatives in the state.
The company plans to launch two new models from its Chennai facility this year, including its first mass-market dedicated EV. HMIL said the rollout forms part of its efforts to accelerate EV adoption and strengthen the EV ecosystem in India.
EV manufacturing and charging
HMIL has established Tamil Nadu’s first battery sub-assembly plant for EV powertrains and is working on localizing power electronics and other critical components.
The company currently operates a direct current (DC) fast EV charging network in Tamil Nadu comprising 39 stations and 78 charging points across key urban and transit corridors. HMIL plans to further expand the charging infrastructure over the next two to three years.
Localization and investment
HMIL aims to increase localization levels from 82% to 90% over the next five to six years. The company also plans to increase purchasing value from Tamil Nadu-based suppliers by around ₹4,000 crore during the same period.
According to the company, the increase in supplier sourcing is expected to create around 2,000 additional jobs in the state.
HMIL also reaffirmed its planned investment of over ₹26,000 crore in Tamil Nadu between 2023 and 2032. The investment forms part of a previously announced ₹45,000 crore investment plan.
Skill development
In partnership with the Government of Tamil Nadu, HMIL will launch a skill development program focused on future mobility technologies, with operations scheduled to begin in December 2027.
The program will include training in EVs, hydrogen mobility, robotics, automation, artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled manufacturing, and smart manufacturing technologies. It will also cover workplace communication and language skills aimed at improving global employability for youth in the state.
Tarun Garg, Managing Director (MD) and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of HMIL, said the initiatives are intended to strengthen Tamil Nadu’s position in sustainable mobility and automotive manufacturing while supporting workforce development.
He added that HMIL has exported more than 3.9 million vehicles manufactured in Tamil Nadu to over 150 countries, describing the company’s manufacturing base with the phrase: “Born in Tamil Nadu, Made for the World.”
