Foundation laid for 1,600 MW thermal power plant in West Bengal

The Government of West Bengal laid the foundation stone for a new 1,600 MW thermal power project at Salboni in Paschim Medinipur district on April 21, 2025. JSW Energy Limited also commenced construction on the same day.
The greenfield project will use supercritical or ultra-supercritical technology and have two units of 800 MW each. It is being developed at an estimated cost of Rs 160 billion.
This plant will be connected to the State Transmission Utility (STU) network. It will follow a Public Private Partnership (PPP) model and be developed on a design, build, finance, own, and operate (DBFOO) basis.

These fall under the E-Waste (Management) Rules, 2022, which took effect on April 1, 2023. Solar waste is covered under Chapter V of the rules.
