EU Hydrogen Mechanism draws strong response in first round
The European Commission has completed the first round of activities under the Hydrogen Mechanism, part of the EU Energy and Raw Materials Platform. The initial phase recorded strong participation from both hydrogen producers and offtakers, indicating growing interest in structured market development.
In this round, 265 supply-side projects were registered, covering renewable and low-carbon hydrogen as well as derivatives. The mechanism enabled developers to present supply opportunities and assess demand without running separate procurement processes. These supply options were then shared with European buyers to support market evaluation and sourcing decisions.
On the demand side, 45 offtake projects were registered. Expressions of interest were submitted for 87% of the supply opportunities, with half of the suppliers receiving interest from at least three potential buyers. More than half of the listed opportunities, about 54%, included indicative pricing.
The supply portfolio included derivatives such as renewable or low-carbon ammonia (47 projects), methanol (37 projects), e-sustainable aviation fuel (e-SAF) (14 projects), and e-methane (18 projects). Participants on the supply side represented 33 countries, including 16 EU member states, with proposed deliveries across 20 EU countries.
Offtakers expressed demand across 10 EU markets: Belgium, Czechia, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, and Spain. With the matching phase concluded, participants are expected to engage directly to advance commercial discussions.
The European Commission is now evaluating the next phase of the Hydrogen Mechanism, including potential support for infrastructure development. The mechanism aims to address key barriers in the hydrogen sector, such as demand uncertainty, limited infrastructure, and financing constraints, by connecting buyers and suppliers through a structured and transparent platform.
