Atishi launches solar portal to promote rooftop solar installations

Delhi Chief Minister Atishi has launched the Delhi Solar Portal, a single-window platform aimed at simplifying the installation of rooftop solar panels in the city.

The portal enables residents to become ‘prosumers’—power consumers who also generate surplus solar energy—while significantly reducing their electricity bills and earning financial incentives.

The portal is a crucial step toward achieving the Delhi government’s target of generating 750 MW of rooftop solar energy, as outlined in the solar policy introduced in March 2024.

At the launch event at the Delhi Secretariat, Atishi highlighted that the portal provides all necessary information for rooftop solar installation, including a solar calculator to estimate the generation potential of specific rooftops, expected savings, a list of approved vendors, and the pricing of solar systems.

Residents can also submit applications for net metering and subsidies through the portal without needing to visit government offices.

Under the scheme, domestic consumers generating surplus power will earn incentives of Rs 3 per unit for solar plants up to 3 KW and Rs 2 per unit for plants up to 10 KW. Group housing societies and Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs) will receive Rs 2 per unit, while commercial and industrial users will be eligible for Re 1 per unit. A 1 KW solar plant, which generates about 100 units per month, costs Rs 40,000–60,000 to install.

The Delhi government offers an additional subsidy of Rs 2,000 per KW for up to 5 KW, in addition to the national subsidy of Rs 78,000 for 3 KW installations. The initiative is expected to benefit consumers by reducing their power bills to zero and enabling earnings of Rs 700–900 per month from surplus generation.
