BHEL receives LNTP for 800 MW Durgapur thermal project
Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has received a Limited Notice to Proceed (LNTP) from Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC), Kolkata, for the main plant package of the 1×800 MW Durgapur supercritical thermal power station, according to a regulatory filing.
The LNTP was issued on June 10, 2026, and enables BHEL to begin advance engineering activities and place orders for critical long-lead items for the project’s boiler, turbine, and generator package.
The full order for supply and execution of the main plant package is expected to be awarded after completion of 10 months from the date of LNTP issuance.
Project details
The project involves the expansion of the Durgapur Thermal Power Station through the development of a 1×800 MW ultra supercritical thermal power project in Paschim Bardhaman district, West Bengal.
The project site spans 220.15 hectares and does not involve forest land diversion. Water allocation of 57,288 m³ per day from the Damodar River has been approved for the project.
According to project details, the site falls within a Severely Polluted Area (SPA), requiring additional environmental safeguards. These include development of a greenbelt over 40% of the project area, installation of a flue gas desulphurisation (FGD) system for sulphur dioxide (SOâ‚‚) control, and dry fly ash collection with a target of 100% ash utilisation.
Contract details
The LNTP contract is valued at over Rs 90 crore, excluding Goods and Services Tax (GST). The project was awarded through international competitive bidding.
BHEL stated that the transaction does not qualify as a related party transaction. Both BHEL and DVC are public sector undertakings (PSUs), and neither the promoter nor the promoter group of BHEL has any interest in the awarding entity.
