Tata Power Delhi Distribution (Tata Power-DDL) and Nissin Electric have partnered to launch a demonstration project to supply electricity using India’s first micro substation, aimed at delivering stable power to remote areas without access to the grid. The project agreement was signed on 21 August 2024, with operations set to begin in March 2025 after equipment installation and testing in the outskirts of Delhi.

This project features India’s first use of a Power Voltage Transformer (PVT), which converts high-voltage power directly from transmission lines to low-voltage power suitable for residential use. The 100 kVA micro substation will step down 66 kilovolts of 3-phase power to 240 volts of 1-phase power, requiring only 40 sq. mtrs of space.

Running until FY25, the project will focus on cost-effective, reliable power supply and could play a role in disaster recovery. The initiative is part of Japan’s Energy Efficiency Technologies program, under the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organisation (NEDO).
