400 kV GIS Clears HV, PD Tests at Adani's Chitravathi PSP

High Voltage (HV) and Partial Discharge (PD) tests have been completed for the 400 kV Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) supplied by PINGGAO for the under-construction 500 MW / 2,805 MWh Chitravathi Pumped Storage Project (PSP) in Andhra Pradesh.

The testing marks a milestone in the electrical infrastructure works for the project, which is being developed by Adani Green Energy Limited (AGEL) near Peddakotla in the Sri Sathya Sai/Ananthapuramu district.

Chitravathi is Adani’s first pumped storage project. PINGGAO is supplying the 400 kV GIS for the facility.

Project design

The 500 MW / 2,805 MWh Chitravathi PSP is designed as a hydroelectric energy storage facility using two reservoirs for cyclic storage and discharge of energy.

The existing Chitravathi balancing reservoir will serve as the lower reservoir, while a new reservoir will be constructed on the hilltop. The upper reservoir will have an embankment with a maximum height of 57.3 m.

The project will re-utilise 0.216 TMC of water through recirculation between the upper and lower reservoirs. The water use will be non-consumptive, with any losses resulting from evaporation to be replenished periodically.

During operation, water will be cycled between the two reservoirs to store and discharge energy, allowing the facility to function as a 500 MW energy storage asset with a storage capacity of 2,805 MWh.
