Germany awards 2.98 GW in wind and solar-storage auctions

Germany’s Federal Network Agency has announced the results of its May 1, 2026 auctions for onshore wind and innovative solar-plus-storage projects, with both tenders attracting bids well above the offered capacity.

The onshore wind auction offered 2,495 MW and received 628 bids totalling 6,409 MW, nearly 2.6 times the auction volume. The agency awarded 270 projects with a combined capacity of 2,499 MW, while 13 bids were excluded from the process.

The successful bids were awarded at prices ranging from €4.44 ct/kWh to €5.19 ct/kWh, with a volume-weighted average price of €5.06 ct/kWh. This represents a 9% decline from €5.54 ct/kWh recorded in the previous auction round. According to the agency, the average award price has fallen by more than €2 ct/kWh over the past seven auction rounds since August 2024.

Lower Saxony secured the largest share of awarded capacity with 70 projects totalling 628 MW, followed by Brandenburg with 47 projects (468 MW) and North Rhine-Westphalia with 31 projects (353 MW). The remaining 122 projects accounted for 1,050 MW.

Solar-storage auction

The innovation auction, which supports hybrid solar photovoltaic (PV) and battery energy storage projects, offered 475 MW and received 46 bids with a combined capacity of 749 MW. The agency awarded 27 projects totalling 482 MW, while two bids were disqualified.

All successful projects combine solar PV generation with battery energy storage systems. Award prices ranged from €4.75 ct/kWh to €5.61 ct/kWh, with a volume-weighted average of €5.34 ct/kWh, broadly unchanged from €5.31 ct/kWh in the previous round.

Bavaria received the largest allocation with 15 projects totalling 287 MW. Schleswig-Holstein and Brandenburg secured two projects each, with capacities of 53 MW and 51 MW, respectively. The remaining eight projects accounted for 91 MW.

The results indicate continued strong developer interest in Germany’s renewable energy auctions, with both the onshore wind and innovation tenders significantly oversubscribed.
