GAIL (India) Limited has announced a capital outlay of Rs 3,800 crore to develop 700 MW of solar power capacity across Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra. The state-owned natural gas company disclosed the plan through a press release filed with stock exchanges on April 14, 2026, as part of its strategy to advance Net Zero targets.

The investment includes two projects aimed at meeting captive energy requirements of GAIL’s industrial operations. The larger project involves a 600 MW solar power facility at the TUSCO Solar Park in Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh, integrated with a 550 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS). The generated power will be supplied to GAIL’s petrochemical plant in Pata, located in Auraiya district.

The second project comprises a 100 MW solar power plant with a 22 MWh BESS in Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar district, Maharashtra. This facility is intended to serve the captive energy demand of GAIL’s propane dehydrogenation and polypropylene (PDH-PP) plant at Usar in Raigad district. The inclusion of BESS is expected to address intermittency and support a continuous renewable power supply.

GAIL Chairman and Managing Director Deepak Gupta stated that the company’s installed renewable energy capacity is projected to increase from 147 MW to more than 1,000 MW after commissioning of these projects. The company noted that the initiative aligns with India’s energy transition objectives and strengthens its portfolio across conventional and renewable energy segments.
