Union Minister for Power, Shri Manohar Lal, visited the Gorakhpur Haryana Anu Vidyut Pariyojana (GHAVP). This nuclear project, being developed by Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL), will host four Pressurised Heavy Water Reactors (PHWRs) of 700 MWe each.
The minister reviewed the construction progress and milestones. Unit 1 of GHAVP is scheduled for its first concrete pour by October 2025. Its first criticality is planned for June 2030, with commercial operations expected to begin by March 2031. Unit 2 is expected to follow with a six-month delay.
Once operational, GHAVP will contribute significantly to Haryana’s electricity supply. Half of the power generated will be allocated to the state, strengthening its base-load capacity.
On 15 June 2025, Union Minister of New and Renewable Energy Shri Pralhad Joshi addressed a stakeholders’ conference in Bengaluru on the occasion of Global Wind Day. He emphasised wind energy as a central part of India’s renewable energy plans, aligned with national goals of 50% power capacity from non-fossil sources by 2030 and achieving net-zero by 2070.
India is now the fourth largest in wind power installed capacity and ranks third in total renewable generation globally.
Shri Joshi outlined three challenges for the wind sector: integrating wind with solar and storage for a stable power supply, reducing tariffs to below Rs 3.90 per unit, and improving domestic manufacturing efficiency to meet targets and boost exports.
He also pointed to a 53% rise in this year’s renewable energy budget, now at Rs 265.49 billion. The funds aim to support offshore wind expansion, new projects in states like Madhya Pradesh and Odisha, and local manufacturing of turbines. India currently produces turbines up to 5.2 MW capacity across 33 models.
At the event, the minister released two key reports: the Wind Energy Roadmap and the Manufacturing Roadmap. Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Gujarat were awarded for leading wind capacity additions.
