Tata Power has launched a new power distribution technology centre (PDTC) in Bhubaneswar to enhance real-time monitoring and control of electricity distribution across Odisha. This facility is the first integrated state-level control centre in India’s power distribution sector.
The PDTC manages live operations of 250 SCADA-enabled primary substations in central Odisha. It is staffed by over 50 qualified engineers, including a significant number of women professionals. The centre operates 24×7 and is equipped with advanced distribution management systems (ADMS) for improved network reliability and system control.
Geographical Information System (GIS) tools are used to streamline asset management and consumer indexing. A utility data stream (UDS) integrates GIS, billing, and metering systems to automate energy audits. The centre also uses real-time weather monitoring and satellite communication to ensure operational continuity.
The PDTC monitors the state’s peak electricity demand, which has now exceeded 6,000 MW. It functions as a central command unit for fault detection, automated switching, and outage management.
According to a report in The New Indian Express, the facility is managed entirely by a homegrown workforce, with women professionals in key roles. Pravati Mishra, executive engineer at PDTC, said the centre reflects a broader push to modernise power distribution infrastructure using digital systems and skilled local personnel.
