SPML Infra wins Rs 1,128 crore NTPC battery storage project in Bihar
SPML Infra Limited has secured a Rs 1,128 crore contract from NTPC Limited to develop a 1 GWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) at the Barauni Thermal Power Station in Bihar. The award marks the company’s entry into large-scale grid-connected battery storage and is among the largest single BESS orders in India.
The contract covers the supply, civil works, and erection of a 250 MW / 1,000 MWh BESS. The scope includes 5 MWh DC containers with Battery Management Systems (BMS) and Thermal Management Systems (TMS), 33 kV panel boards, 220 kV DC and AC cables, a 220 kV switchyard, and associated equipment. The project will be implemented over 18 months, followed by 15 years of operation and maintenance.
The system will be integrated with the existing thermal power infrastructure at Barauni, enabling peak load management, improved grid stability, and better integration of renewable energy into the network.
The project forms part of NTPC’s broader 2.670 GWh BESS tender spanning seven thermal power stations. Under the same tender, Pratap Technocrats Pvt Ltd has been allocated 570 MWh of BESS capacity across the Gadarwara and Khargone power plants. The Gadarwara Super Thermal Power Station includes a 320 MW BESS project, while the Khargone Super Thermal Power Station includes a 250 MW BESS project.
Abhinandan Sethi, Managing Director of SPML Infra, said the project reflects the company’s commitment to large-scale battery storage and its role in supporting a more flexible and stable power grid.
