SECI awards 1,344 MW under pumped storage tender
The Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) has awarded 1,344 MW of pumped storage capacity under its 1,500 MW/12,000 MWh tender floated in December 2025.
The tender sought developers to establish pumped storage projects (PSPs) and make storage capacity available to buying entities on an on-demand basis. Of the total capacity offered, 156 MW remained unawarded.
Auction results
Greenko Energies Private Limited emerged as the largest winner in the auction, securing 720 MW of capacity. The company quoted a total storage cost of Rs 13.49 million per MW per annum and an equivalent annual fixed charge (EAFC) of Rs 10.96 million per MW per annum.
Tata Power Company Limited secured 324 MW at a total storage cost of Rs 13.51 million per MW per annum and an EAFC of Rs 10.84 million per MW per annum.
Torrent Energy Storage Solutions Private Limited was awarded the remaining 300 MW at a total storage cost of Rs 13.5 million per MW per annum.
Project framework
Under the tender framework, the selected developers will be responsible for setting up the PSPs, including land acquisition, project development, obtaining statutory approvals and establishing grid connectivity.
The storage capacity created through these projects will be offered to buying entities on an on-demand basis. While the project developers will own and operate the PSP infrastructure, the buying entities will manage charging and discharging operations.
The tender was issued at a time when demand for long-duration energy storage is increasing alongside rapid renewable energy additions. Pumped storage projects are expected to play a significant role in balancing intermittent renewable generation and meeting peak electricity demand.
