PLN launches 1,225 MW solar tender across Indonesia
Indonesian state-owned electric utility company PLN has launched a tender for the 1,225 MW Mentari Nusantara I solar power project, which will be developed across multiple regions of Indonesia. The procurement process began on April 30 under an integrated tender scheme called ‘Giga One’, with the projects targeted to begin commercial operations in 2029.
The solar capacity will be distributed across several regions, including 35 MW in Sumatra, 340 MW in Kalimantan, 600 MW in Java, 50 MW in Sulawesi, 80 MW in West Nusa Tenggara, and 120 MW across Maluku and Papua.
PLN said the ‘Giga One’ procurement model has been designed to support economies of scale and provide greater certainty for investors by combining several projects into a single package. The utility has not yet announced a closing date for the tender.
Suroso Isnandar, Director of Project Management and New and Renewable Energy at PLN, said the Mentari Nusantara project is intended to serve as an early driver for the Indonesian government’s target of developing 100 GW of solar capacity.
Isnandar described the Giga One model as “a new blueprint for renewable energy procurement in Indonesia and an important milestone in the national energy transition journey.” He added that the procurement strategy is expected to be replicated in future hydropower, wind power, and battery energy storage system tenders.
According to International Energy Agency data, renewable energy accounted for nearly 16% of Indonesia’s energy mix in 2023, led mainly by hydropower and geothermal energy. Solar contributed 1.7% of the country’s energy mix, while coal remained the dominant source at around 36%.
