The Parsa East and Kanta Basan (PEKB) coal mine in Surguja, Chhattisgarh, has become the first coal mine in the state — and among the first in India — to achieve full energy self-sufficiency using solar power.
Operated by Rajasthan Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Ltd (RRVUNL), the mine now relies entirely on solar energy for its internal operations. A 9 MW solar power plant, developed by Mundra Solar Limited, a subsidiary of Adani Green Energy Limited, has been commissioned for the site.
The solar plant is built on 30 acres of reclaimed mine land, showcasing an effort to reuse land sustainably. The shift is expected to lower the mine’s carbon emissions and aligns with India’s renewable energy transition goals.
In a further step towards greening operations, Adani Enterprises has also deployed India’s first hydrogen fuel cell truck at the PEKB site.
