NTPC crosses 90 GW installed capacity with Patratu Unit-2 trial completion

NTPC Limited has announced the successful completion of the trial run operation of Unit-2 (800 MW) at Patratu Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited (PVUNL), taking the total installed capacity of the NTPC group to 90,668 MW. The development marks another milestone for NTPC as it expands its thermal power portfolio and strengthens supply capacity in eastern India.

The 800 MW unit is part of the Patratu Super Thermal Power Plant (STPP) in Jharkhand. PVUNL had earlier synchronised Unit-2 with the grid on March 17, 2026. The first unit of the project, Unit-1 (800 MW), achieved commercial operation on November 5, 2025.

With the completion of the trial run for Unit-2, NTPC has moved closer to full commissioning of Phase I of the project. Commercial operation declaration for the unit is expected after fulfilment of standard operational norms and regulatory approvals. Unit-3 (800 MW) is anticipated to reach trial run by February 2027.

PVUNL is a joint venture between NTPC and Jharkhand Bijli Vitran Nigam Limited (JBVNL). Phase I comprises three units of 800 MW each, totalling 2,400 MW, being developed in Ramgarh district under an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract awarded to Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), valued at Rs 18,668 crore.

Approximately 85% of the power generated from the project will be allocated to Jharkhand. Coal supply is planned from the Banhadi coal block in Latehar district, where no-objection certificates have been obtained from local communities.
