NTPC achieves world-first CO2-to-methanol synthesis at Vindhyachal plant
NTPC has synthesised CO2 captured from flue gas with hydrogen produced from a PEM electrolyser to create methanol at its Vindhyachal plant.
NTPC Chairman Gurdeep Singh, speaking at the company’s 50th Raising Day, highlighted that both the CO2 capture plant and the CO2-to-methanol plant are the first of their kind globally, a historic advancement in sustainable fuel production.
NTPC is also progressing in areas like Gen-4 ethanol, green urea, and sustainable aviation fuel. The company developed the ‘first indigenous catalyst’ for methanol synthesis, reflecting its commitment to environmentally sustainable practices. In line with this, NTPC virtually launched hydrogen-fuel buses, set to operate in Leh, demonstrating its investment in clean technologies.
The company also unveiled a new 50-year logo symbolizing its legacy and infinite commitment to growth. During the event, NTPC recognized the achievements of employees’ children, launched IT applications, and released a special comic book on its Girl Empowerment Mission (GEM), a CSR program that has benefitted over 10,000 girls from rural areas.
Reflecting on NTPC’s journey, Singh paid tribute to the company’s visionary founders and reaffirmed NTPC’s mission to power India’s future through a growing renewable footprint, including nuclear energy, aimed at creating a sustainable future with infinite possibilities.
