NLC India, NPCIL sign MoU for nuclear power joint venture
NLC India Limited has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) to establish a joint venture company for developing nuclear power projects in India, marking the company’s entry into the nuclear energy segment as part of its clean energy diversification strategy.
The MoU was signed on May 25, 2026, by S. Venkatachalam, Director (Power) of NLC India Limited (NLCIL), and Rajesh, Director (Technical) of NPCIL. The signing took place in the presence of Prasanna Kumar Motupalli, Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of NLCIL, and Bhuvan Chandra Pathak, CMD of NPCIL, along with functional directors from both organisations.
Under the agreement, the proposed joint venture will focus on establishing 700 MW indigenous Pressurised Heavy Water Reactor (PHWR)-based nuclear power projects, along with other reactor technologies and capacities based on mutual agreement and technological suitability.
The collaboration also includes potential investment opportunities for the joint venture in NPCIL’s existing and upcoming 700 MW PHWR projects.
The development aligns with India’s target of achieving 100 GW of nuclear power capacity by 2047. It also follows the passage of the Sustainable Harnessing and Advancement of Nuclear Energy for Transforming India (SHANTI) Bill in December 2025, which aims to modernise the country’s nuclear energy policy and legislative framework.
Prasanna Kumar Motupalli said the partnership represents a major step in NLC India’s diversification into sustainable energy sectors. He added that nuclear energy will play an important role in strengthening India’s long-term energy security and supporting the country’s net-zero carbon goals.
