NHPC restores 340 MW at Teesta-V hydropower station in Sikkim
NHPC Limited has resumed commercial operation of two generating units at its 510 MW Teesta-V Power Station in Sikkim, restoring 340 MW of generation capacity after successful synchronisation with the national grid.
Unit No. 1 and Unit No. 2, each with an installed capacity of 170 MW, commenced commercial operation at 17:00 hours on July 13, 2026, according to the company. The third 170 MW unit is expected to be brought back into service in due course.
The restoration comes shortly after NHPC commissioned a new Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) at the Teesta-V project.
The GIS facility was inaugurated on July 11, 2026, by Diwakar Nath Mishra, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Power, Government of India, and Bhupendra Gupta, Chairman and Managing Director of NHPC.
Senior NHPC officials present at the inauguration included Sanjay Kumar Singh, Director (Projects); Suprakash Adhikari, Director (Technical); Jitendra Kumar, Executive Director and Station Head; Sudhir Kumar Yadav, Executive Director (Siliguri Sector); Indradev Prasad Ranjan, Executive Director (Operation & Maintenance); and Umesh Kumar Nand, Executive Director (PMSG), along with other company representatives.
During the inauguration, Bhupendra Gupta reviewed the restoration work and commended the project team for bringing two generating units back into commercial operation.
He also emphasised the need to expedite restoration of the remaining unit while maintaining safety, quality and operational standards.
With two units now operational, the Teesta-V Power Station has restored 340 MW of its total 510 MW installed capacity, while efforts continue to resume commercial operation of the third generating unit.
