French renewable energy firm Neoen has inaugurated Portugal’s largest solar park, located in Azambuja, 70 km north of Lisbon. The facility began supplying electricity to the grid in late 2024 and is now fully operational.
The park includes the 204 MWp Rio Maior and the 68 MWp Torre Bela solar farms, which together will generate over 500 GWh of electricity annually—enough to power 110,000 homes. The site connects to the Portuguese national grid through a 400 kV line to the REN substation.
The Portuguese government will purchase 80% of the energy under two 15-year power purchase agreements awarded in the 2019 auction. The remaining electricity and certificates of origin will be sold on the open market.
Located within the Herdade da Torre Bela estate, the solar park is spread across 20-hectare plots separated by green corridors, linking biodiversity zones covering nearly 200 hectares. Around 6,000 cork oaks have been preserved, and visual screens conceal the solar panels to maintain the landscape.
With this addition, Neoen’s operational and under-construction capacity in Portugal now totals 326 MWp. The company also has more than 600 MW in development, covering solar, wind, and battery storage. This includes a wind and storage project planned at Rio Maior, identified as a key grid location.
