Maharashtra State Power Generation Company Limited (MSPGCL) has operationalized the 660 MW Unit VI at the Bhusawal Thermal Power Plant in Jalgaon district. The expansion project was developed at an investment of Rs 63.5 billion.

The new unit replaces the 62.5 MW Unit I, which was retired in December 2010. The engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contract for Unit VI was awarded to Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL).

Unit VI will require 3.99 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) of washed coal at an 85 percent plant load factor (PLF). The primary coal supply will come from Mahaguj Collieries’ Machhakata coal blocks. Until these mines become operational, MSPGCL will procure 1 mtpa of domestic coal from Western Coalfields Limited (WCL) under tapering linkage and 1.99 mtpa from other MSPGCL plants that are being decommissioned.

The project requires 20 million cubic meters (mcm) of water annually, with 13 mcm sourced from Hatnur dam and Sudhgaon Bandhara and 7 mcm from Ozerkheda dam.

The Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC) approved the signing of a power purchase agreement (PPA) between MSPGCL and Mahavitaran, ensuring the integration of the new unit’s power into the state’s grid.
