The Ministry of Power (MoP) has launched the National Electricity Plan for transmission, targeting the transmission of 500 GW of renewable energy by 2030 and over 600 GW by 2032. The plan also addresses the need for 47 GW of battery energy storage systems and 31 GW of pumped storage plants.
From 2022-23 to 2031-32, the plan aims to add over 191,000 circuit km of transmission lines and 1,270 GVA of transformation capacity at 220 kV and above. It includes the development of 33 GW of high voltage direct current (HVDC) bi-pole links and plans to increase inter-regional transmission capacity from 119 GW to 143 GW by 2027 and 168 GW by 2032.
The plan emphasizes cross-border connections with Nepal, Bhutan, Myanmar, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka, while also exploring potential links with Saudi Arabia and the UAE. With numerous transmission projects in progress, the plan estimates an investment opportunity of over Rs 9.15 trillion in the transmission sector by 2032.
