Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited (TPREL), a subsidiary of The Tata Power Company Limited, has announced the commissioning of a 1 GW alternating current solar project for SJVN Limited in Bikaner, Rajasthan. This is TPREL’s largest Domestic Content Requirement (DCR)-compliant installation and will supply power to three states.
The project spans the Bandarwala and Kamisar Bhatiyan sites in Bikaner, Rajasthan. It has an AC capacity of 1,000 MW, equal to 1 GW, and a DC capacity of 1,400 MWp. The facility uses about 2.4 million solar modules. All modules and cells were manufactured domestically at the TP Solar Limited facility in Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu, meeting DCR conditions and supporting the national Make in India programme.
Electricity from the project has been allocated to three state utilities. Rajasthan Urja Vikas and IT Services Limited (RUVITL) will receive 500 MW. Jammu & Kashmir Power Limited (JKPL) will receive 300 MW. Uttarakhand Power Corporation Limited (UPCL) will receive 200 MW. In the first year, the project is expected to generate about 2,454.84 million kWh and is estimated to offset nearly 1.74 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions.
TPREL noted that the project was delivered under challenging climate and site conditions, including temperatures ranging from 50°C to 3°C and difficult terrain. The company deployed DCR-compliant mono bifacial modules and high-performance inverters suited to these conditions. The project also generated local benefits by employing and training more than 300 workers and developing over 25 local vendors.
With this commissioning, TPREL has reached 4.9 GW of executed third-party utility-scale renewable capacity in its engineering, procurement, and construction portfolio. Tata Power’s total operational clean energy capacity now stands at 7.0 GW, representing 44% of its overall installed capacity of 15.9 GW.
