MNRE extends domestic sourcing deadline for wind turbine bearings
Author: PPD Team Date: February 18, 2026
The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has extended timelines for meeting domestic sourcing requirements for specific wind turbine bearings under the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM). The decision covers main bearings, yaw bearings and pitch bearings, citing supply chain constraints.
In an office memorandum dated February 16, 2026, MNRE revised its earlier July 31, 2025, directive that mandated domestic procurement of special bearings for wind turbine projects. The revision follows representations from industry regarding limited availability of these components within the domestic supply chain.
For projects where bidding was completed before July 31, 2025, main bearings have been exempted from compliance with paragraph 4(h) of the procedure. The exemption applies to all projects already bid or to be bid until July 31, 2027. This two-year period from the date of the original directive will be subject to review based on developments in the domestic supply chain.
For wind power projects scheduled to be commissioned within eighteen months from July 31, 2025, under captive, open access, commercial and industrial (C&I), or third-party sale arrangements, MNRE has introduced a staggered exemption framework. Yaw and pitch bearings have been granted a one-year extension until January 31, 2028. Main bearings are exempted for two years until January 31, 2029, subject to review.
All other provisions of the July 31, 2025 office memorandum remain in force. The amendments have been issued with the approval of the competent authority and circulated to relevant stakeholders.
