Lucknow has surpassed Surat to become the leading Indian city in rooftop solar installations, based on data released in mid-April 2026 by the Uttar Pradesh New and Renewable Energy Development Agency. The city now records the highest level of residential solar deployment in the country.

The rise is linked to the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, which promotes household solar adoption. In early 2026, Lucknow added 3,133 systems, taking total installations beyond 87,000, the highest for any district nationwide.

Higher electricity use, driven by appliances and electric vehicles, along with rising tariffs, has pushed households towards rooftop solar as a cost-saving option. Subsidies from central and state governments have reduced upfront costs, while a simplified application process has eased adoption.

Improved coordination between distribution companies and implementing agencies has enabled quicker approvals and installations, limiting delays.

Other cities in Uttar Pradesh are also seeing steady growth, reflecting wider awareness of clean energy and cost benefits. Lucknow’s progress is emerging as a benchmark for urban rooftop solar expansion.
