Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) is working to revive the long-stalled 163 MW Athirapally Hydro Electric Project in Thrissur district. The project, earlier held back due to environmental concerns, has now received environmental clearance.

KSEB’s board of directors has approved a revised plan for the project. A viability study is currently underway to assess the implementation.

The hydro project is located on the Chalakudy river basin and is expected to cost around Rs 16 billion. It is being positioned as a solution to Kerala’s peak-hour power shortage.

KSEB is also exploring ways to integrate tourism into the project. The move reflects a strategic push to improve power generation and reduce supply gaps during peak demand.
