Kangra Deputy Commissioner Hemraj Bairwa announced the creation of a model solar village as part of the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Free Electricity Scheme. This village will act as a prototype for sustainable energy solutions, reflecting Kangra’s commitment to green energy. Villages with over 2,000 residents and strong involvement in non-conventional energy practices are eligible, and Rs 1 crore will be allocated to the selected village for implementing green initiatives.
Lists of eligible villages have been distributed across the Kangra, Dehra, and Dalhousie circles, and the selection process is underway. Once chosen, a ‘Model Solar Village Implementation Agency’ will develop a detailed project report (DPR) for the village’s transformation into a solar-powered community.
Under the Surya Ghar scheme, the government provides significant subsidies for grid-connected rooftop solar installations, with up to 60% subsidy for systems up to 3 kW. Residents can apply for participation via the PM Surya Ghar online portal.
