The Ministry of Power has launched a dedicated task force to design the India Energy Stack (IES), a new digital public infrastructure aimed at transforming the power sector.
Announced by Hon’ble Power Minister Shri Manohar Lal Khattar, the India Energy Stack will address long-standing gaps in data fragmentation and integration across the power sector. With rising renewable energy, electric vehicles, and decentralised generation, the sector faces increasing complexity. IES seeks to provide a unified solution.
The India Energy Stack will include:
- Unique digital IDs for consumers, assets, and transactions
- Consent-based, real-time data sharing
- Open APIs for system integration
- Tools to support innovation, market participation, and consumer empowerment
The Ministry will also run a 12-month Proof of Concept (PoC) to demonstrate real-world use cases of IES. A key pilot involves the Utility Intelligence Platform (UIP), an analytics-based application layered on IES. It will help utilities and regulators access actionable insights and improve energy management.
UIP pilots will begin in Mumbai, Gujarat, and Delhi in collaboration with local DISCOMs. The outcomes will inform a national rollout roadmap.
The task force includes experts from the power sector, digital platforms, and regulatory bodies. Its work will lead to a public consultation paper, pilot evaluations, and a phased deployment strategy.
India Energy Stack aims to support the country’s $5 trillion economy vision and Net Zero targets by modernising how energy is tracked, shared, and optimised.
