The International Solar Alliance (ISA) opened its seventh Assembly session in New Delhi, with ministers from 29 nations in attendance. India’s Minister for New and Renewable Energy and ISA Assembly President, Shri Pralhad Joshi, emphasized the pivotal role of solar energy, stating, “Solar energy is leading the world toward a sustainable future.” He noted ISA’s successful completion of 21 of 27 demonstration projects, showcasing significant strides in solar energy deployment globally, especially in Least Developed Countries (LDCs) and Small Island Developing States (SIDS).
Key initiatives unveiled include the Solar Data Portal, which provides real-time solar resource data, and the Global Solar Facility, which aims to channel commercial capital for solar projects, particularly in Africa.
A pilot project is underway in the Democratic Republic of Congo, with commitments totalling USD 39 million from India, ISA, and other partners, expected to be operational by COP29. The SolarX Startup Challenge also recognized 30 innovative solutions across the Asia-Pacific region, with plans to expand to Latin America and the Caribbean.
ISA’s monthly Knowledge Series and the Green Hydrogen Innovation Centre are advancing solar research and development, while global events like the International Solar Festival and the ISA Pavilion at COP27 and COP28 foster worldwide solar advocacy.
France renewed its pledge of €1.5 billion to support ISA’s STAR-C programme, which focuses on capacity building, financing access, and expanding ISA’s international reach.
ISA Director General Dr. Ajay Mathur highlighted the Assembly’s role in fostering global partnerships and introducing initiatives to drive solar transformation. The Assembly will review ISA’s budget and work plans for 2024, including Viability Gap Funding (VGF) guidelines that offer 10%-35% project funding grants in LDCs and SIDS. The Assembly will also elect a new President and Co-President and select a new Director General.
The Assembly culminates on November 6 with a farm visit showcasing agrivoltaics, integrating solar power with agriculture. Following the Assembly, a High-Level Technology Conference on Clean Technologies will launch ISA’s third World Solar Reports edition, focusing on technology, investment, and market insights.
ISA’s efforts underscore its commitment to global energy access, security, and transition, advancing solar solutions in agriculture, health, and other sectors to fuel sustainable growth worldwide.
