NLC India commissions final 660 MW unit of Ghatampur thermal project
NLC India Limited has declared commercial operation declaration (COD) for Unit-3 of the Ghatampur Thermal Power Project with effect from 00:00 hours on June 13, 2026. The unit has a capacity of 660 MW.
With the commissioning of the third unit, the entire 3×660 MW Ghatampur Thermal Power Station, with a total installed capacity of 1,980 MW, has entered commercial operation.
Project structure
The Ghatampur project is being developed through Neyveli Uttar Pradesh Power Limited (NUPPL), a joint venture between NLC India Limited and Uttar Pradesh Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited (UPRVUNL).
NLC India holds a 51% equity stake in the joint venture, while UPRVUNL holds the remaining 49%.
Capacity addition
Following the commissioning of Unit-3, the total installed power generation capacity of the NLC India group has increased from 7,745 MW to 8,405 MW, representing a net addition of 660 MW.
The project strengthens NLC India’s thermal generation portfolio and expands its presence in the northern region power market.
Strategic importance
The full commissioning of the Ghatampur Thermal Power Project is expected to support baseload electricity supply in Uttar Pradesh and the northern grid.
The project adds thermal generation capacity at a time when electricity demand across the country continues to increase, particularly during peak consumption periods. The plant is also expected to contribute to long-term supply reliability in the state.
