The International Geothermal Standard Committee was established on 26 November in Beijing, with Sinopec hosting its permanent Secretariat. Formed by the International Geothermal Association, the committee brings together 30 experts from 15 countries to advance unified global geothermal standards.
The group adopted its Standard Development Procedures and the 2025–2027 Work Programme. It will develop a complete standards framework covering district heating, drilling and completion, power generation, reservoir engineering, resource exploration and evaluation, and shallow geothermal systems. The aim is to support faster technology deployment and strengthen the geothermal supply chain.
Leaders from Sinopec and the IGA said common standards will accelerate collaboration, improve industry quality and help expand geothermal development worldwide.
Sinopec, China’s largest mid and deep geothermal operator, has drafted more than half of the country’s national geothermal standards and led its first IGA international standard. Its geothermal heating project in Xiongxian County is listed in the International Renewable Energy Agency’s global promotion catalogue.
