India’s solar capacity jumps 4000% in a decade: Goyal

Author: PPD Team Date: July 14, 2025

India’s installed solar capacity has grown 4000% over the last decade, Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal said at the 11th India Energy Storage Week (IESW) 2025 held in New Delhi.

Mr. Goyal said India’s total renewable energy capacity has reached 227 GW. He also claimed that India is likely the first G20 country to have met its Nationally Determined Contributions under the Paris Agreement.

The Minister highlighted Jammu and Kashmir’s Palli village as India’s first carbon-neutral panchayat. The village runs entirely on solar energy and energy-efficient systems.

He pointed to manufacturing growth in solar equipment. Since 2014, solar photovoltaic (PV) module manufacturing capacity has increased 38 times. PV cell manufacturing capacity has risen 21 times.

Calling for a comprehensive energy strategy, Mr. Goyal outlined four key areas:

  • Innovation in storage technologies

  • Infrastructure development, including charging and swapping networks

  • Resilient supply chains to reduce import dependence

  • Growth across the full value chain from raw materials to battery recycling

He also emphasised the need to build leadership in energy storage research, including solid-state and hybrid chemistries. Mr. Goyal said India should establish a circular economy for battery materials and expand industry collaboration to accelerate electric mobility and clean energy access.
