GAIL (India) Limited has approved the development of a 178.2 MW greenfield wind power project in Maharashtra, with an estimated investment of Rs 1,736.25 crore. The decision was taken at a board meeting held on February 27, 2026.

The proposed capacity will add to GAIL’s existing wind portfolio of 117.95 MW, which is currently operating at full capacity. The project is scheduled for completion within 24 months from the award of the Lump Sum Turnkey (LSTK) contract. The company plans to fund the investment through a mix of debt and equity, citing business expansion as the rationale.

The wind project forms part of GAIL’s strategy to expand its presence in renewable energy alongside its gas transmission and distribution operations. With its current wind assets fully utilised, the Maharashtra project represents the next stage of capacity addition in the renewable segment.
